Lent 18

Jeremiah 5:30-31

30 “A horrible and shocking thing
    has happened in the land:
31 The prophets prophesy lies,
the priests rule by their own authority,
and my people love it this way.
But what will you do in the end?

Sometimes the Bible just up and smacks a person in the head huh? Sometimes because it is deep and wondrous and says exactly what a heart has been longing and longing to hear. And sometimes because it's just straight up funny.  "My people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?" Indeed.

People do totally love it this way, don't they? Often I do. I love the lies that our leaders tell us, because so many of them justify living unjustly in the world. And good gravy, how many people are dressing up their own wants and ideas as God's and them imposing them on the many to their own gain? A few thousand years ago, this was horrible and shocking! I wonder if it still is.

The sweet counterbalance to all this is in Romans. I'm not sure how reliable Paul is, but he says that we all end up justified by faith, not by our adherence to the Law. It gets messy, as it always does with him, but in the end, we get back to the source of our righteousness: the Creator of all things, worthy of our fearful praise if we are remembering the awesomeness of all that has been created (see the Psalms today). That God offers righteousness - not the prophets or priests of our day. The Maker of All Things. What is required is faith.

Faith in a dude that told his friends, Nope, it's not time for me to go to Jerusalem yet, and then waited until they had left to dress up and follow them in secret to see what was actually going on. That guy, that weird, weird guy is our redemption and we just have to have faith that it is so, and somehow we'll survive judgement.

Some days this journey is harder to take than others. But what will you do in the end?
